Description
Zopiclone is a hypnotic agent belonging to the cyclopyrrolone class of compounds. It rapidly induces and maintains sleep without reducing total REM sleep and while preserving slow-wave sleep. Negligible residual effects are observed the following morning. Its pharmacological properties include hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle-relaxant actions. These are related to its high affinity and specific agonist effect on central receptors belonging to the macromolecular complex that modulates chloride channel opening. However, zopiclone and other cyclopyrrolones have been shown to act on a different site than benzodiazepines, including different conformational changes in the receptor complex.
