Sibutramine is a medication produced since 1997 and used as adjunctive treatment for nutritional obesity. It is a phenylethylamine anorexigenic drug that causes a modification of brain amines resulting in a decreased appetite and a feeling of fullness.
Sibutramine works by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine. However, unlike fenfluramine and its derivatives, it does not increase circulating serotonin levels and therefore does not have their cardiac side effects. It increases feelings of fullness and consequently reduces food intake. Sibutramine is particularly effective, taking effect at the beginning of the cycle (after only 2-3 days).
It is not recommended to exceed 12 months of treatment and to use Sibutramine if you have a history of cardiovascular disease.
