Oxandrolone is an oral anabolic steroid derived from dihydrotestosterone. It was designed to have a very strong separation of its anabolic and androgenic effects, and no significant estrogenic or progestational activity. Oxandrolone is noted for being a relatively mild compound compared to other oral steroids. It was developed to promote strength and quality muscle tissue gains without significant side effects. Milligram for milligram, it exhibits up to six times the anabolic activity of testosterone in trials, with much less androgenicity. This drug is a favorite among lean bodybuilders and competitive athletes in speed/anaerobic performance sports, where its tendency to promote lean tissue gains (without fat or water retention) aligns well with desired goals. Oxandrolone has a modification at carbon number two in which this second carbon is replaced by an oxygen atom, hence the prefix "ox" in the name Oxandrolone. This substitution of a carbon atom for an oxygen atom is also believed to increase the anabolic capacity of Oxandrolone to high degrees compared to its parent hormone Dihydrotestosterone.

Side effects

Because dihydrotestosterone (DHT) cannot interact with the aromatase enzyme and therefore cannot undergo aromatization (conversion) to estrogen, oxandrolone shares this important trait. Its inability to aromatize to estrogen results in the complete elimination of the potential for any estrogenic and hepatic side effects. Oxandrolone is alkylated at the 17th carbon atom of its steroid structure (properly known as methylation or C17-alpha alkylation) to bypass liver metabolism and allow it to reach the bloodstream to perform its function. Unfortunately, C17-alpha alkylation of oral anabolic steroids is known to exhibit varying degrees of liver toxicity, but oxandrolone has demonstrated significantly less liver toxicity than most other C17-alpha alkylated oral anabolic steroids. It is important, however, to always understand that Oxandrolone is not free of potential liver toxicity and that precautions should always be taken regarding its use in this regard.

Administration

The original prescribing guidelines for Oxandrolone are between 2.5 mg and 20 mg per day (5-10 mg being the most common). This was generally recommended for a period of two to four weeks, but sometimes it has been taken for as long as three months. The usual dosage for physical or performance-enhancing purposes is in the range of 15 to 25 mg per day, taken for 6 to 8 weeks. These protocols are not far removed from those of normal therapeutic situations.
