Lantus (insulin glargine) is a form of the hormone insulin produced in the body. Insulin is a hormone that works by lowering glucose (sugar) levels in the blood. Insulin glargine is a long-acting insulin that starts working several hours after injection and continues to work steadily for 24 hours.

Lantus is used to improve blood glucose control in adults and children with diabetes mellitus.

Lantus is intended for adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, and for children aged 6 years and older with type 1 diabetes.

You should not use Lantus if you have an episode of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), or if you are in a state of diabetic ketoacidosis (call your doctor for treatment).

Never share a Lantus injection pen or cartridge with another person. Sharing injection pens or cartridges can allow diseases such as hepatitis or HIV to be transmitted from one person to another.

Not all brands of insulin glargine are equal in dosage. Follow your doctor's instructions when switching brands. If there are changes in the brand, strength, or type of insulin you use, your dosage requirements may change.

Lantus is only one part of a comprehensive treatment program that may also include diet, exercise, weight management, foot care, eye care, dental care, and blood glucose testing. Monitor your diet, medications, and exercise routines very closely. Changing any of these factors can affect your blood sugar levels.
