The history of Mr. Olympia, one of the most popular international bodybuilding competitions. Its biggest names and list of winners.
Mr. Olympia is one of the most popular international bodybuilding competitions. It is organized annually by the IFBB, or International Federation of Bodybuilders. Winning this competition is considered the highest honor in professional bodybuilding. Joe Weider He is the man to whom we owe this competition. In its early years, this competition allowed the winners of the Mr. Universe tournament to compete and win money. The first edition of the competition took place on September 18, 1965.

The Story of Mister Olympia
Until 1965, it was quite difficult for bodybuilders to maintain their skills in the sport. Winners of the Mr. Universe, Mr. World, and Mr. America competitions used these titles to assert their superiority. However, these arguments never led to any real conclusion. One day, Joe Weider and Larry Scott were eating at a popular restaurant, and Larry explained how he had won the Mr. Universe and Mr. America titles and that he had nothing left to accomplish.

Joe spent some time examining existing bodybuilding competitions and felt that none of them reflected his vision for the future of the sport. So, he decided to create the ultimate competition – Mr. Olympia. The first edition of the competition was launched in 1965. The first Mr. Olympia competition was won by Larry Scott. He even won the competition the following year.

The first edition of the competition took place at the famous Brooklyn Academy of Music (Brooklyn Academy of Music).
When Larry Scott ventured outside after the show, the crowd went absolutely wild. The third Mr. Olympia competition ushered in a new era in the world of bodybuilding. Sergio Oliva was the winner of the following three competitions.
In 1970, Arnold Schwarzenegger dethroned Sergio Oliva. The previous year, he had come in second. In 1976, a small bodybuilder named Franco Columbo won the competition. It was the first time a bodybuilder of his size had won the competition. Frank Zane then went on to become Mr. Olympia for the next three years.

The Mr. Olympia competition is considered the most coveted in bodybuilding. Over the years, many champions have come and gone from this sport. However, winning Mr. Olympia is still considered the ultimate honor in professional bodybuilding. Lee Haney and Ronnie Coleman hold the record for the number of victories, namely eight.
It's worth noting that the competition is entirely professional. To participate in Mr. Olympia, you must have achieved exceptional results in high-level competitions like Mr. Universe and Mr. World. If you haven't been able to demonstrate your status as a renowned bodybuilder in these competitions, you cannot participate in Mr. Olympia. Therefore, you'll only find the most popular and recognized athletes in this competition.
In 2005, the Mr. Olympia competition took place in October. It was hosted in Las Vegas at the’Orleans Arena of the Hotel Orleans. Other events also took place at the popular Las Vegas Convention Center. Initially, a press conference was organized. It provided an opportunity to meet the various competitors from the four events.
During the press conference, spectators were also allowed to ask questions of their favorite fitness competitors and bodybuilders. The competition concluded with an Olympia seminar, held on Sunday after the main show. During the seminar, the bodybuilders discussed their experiences and feelings about the event.
The highly controversial Sydney show
In 1980, a major controversy arose surrounding the competition. This edition of the event was held in Sydney, Australia. The conflict centered on Arnold Schwarzenegger's participation. He had already announced his retirement from competition in 1975. It's worth noting that he had won six consecutive Mr. Olympia titles.
Arnold, while making comments on the eve of the competition, shocked the entire bodybuilding world by declaring that he would participate in the competition, in pursuit of a seventh Mr. Olympia title.
Many participants considered this edition a major disaster. Indeed, several judges had business and professional relationships with Arnold Schwarzenegger. The event was promoted by Paul Graham, a close friend of Arnold's. When Arnold was on stage, it was clear that Schwarzenegger had worked hard to sculpt his upper body but hadn't been able to work on his legs. According to most bodybuilding experts, he shouldn't have won this edition.

In 2003, Schwarzenegger was elected Governor of California. He then demonstrated his love for bodybuilding and made a surprise appearance at the Mr. Olympia competition to watch the show. The crowd went wild and cheered him on throughout the competition. He told the 6,000 spectators that he felt right at home again. Arnold still believes he wouldn't have been able to achieve such tremendous success without bodybuilding.
Is the competition rigged?
When dealing with a sport as subjective as bodybuilding, there will always be speculation about whether the competition is rigged, especially when the result is unpopular. It's worth mentioning that 13 judges must work together to announce the result. Therefore, it's highly unlikely that the competition is fixed.
However, it's important to understand that, over 40 years, only 10 winners have been declared. Once someone wins the competition, they often go on to win it for several consecutive years. Perhaps the main reason is that bodybuilding is subject to trends and fashion. Everyone tries to emulate the winner and adjusts their training regimens and diets accordingly. Currently, Phil Heath's physique is considered ideal. Therefore, as long as he continues to compete, it's highly unlikely he'll lose it.
The Mr. Olympia trophy

In the world of bodybuilding, something extraordinary happened on September 14, 1901. Eugen Sandow, a popular Anglo-German fitness entrepreneur, organized the world's first ultimate physique competition. At the time, it was called the Grand Competition.
From a pool of 60 applicants, three winners were carefully selected. Each of these lucky winners received an exceptional prize.
The beautifully sculpted trophy resembled Mr. Sandow himself.
At the 1980 Mr. Olympia competition, the new trophy was introduced. Since then, it has remained a major symbol of bodybuilding and is considered the most coveted prize. However, if you want to participate in the competition, you must first build a strong reputation in other popular competitions, including Mr. Universe, Mr. World, and Mr. America.
The Mister Olympia competition is so popular that there are now several categories.

- Mr. Olympia
- Fitness Olympia
- Figure Olympia
- Bikini Olympia
- Women's physique
- Men's physique
- 212 Showdown

Arnold <3
Gone are the days when bodybuilding was all about symmetry. Back then, Dorian Yates and Arnold were my favorites. Now they're just huge and pumped up. Symmetry is completely irrelevant. Still impressive, sure. But guys like Big Ronnie Coleman, Jay Cutler, Kai Greene, and the like are, first and foremost, massive, supercharged muscle. Physical beauty is no longer the focus; it's "Who's got the biggest?" that reigns supreme, IMHO.
