PT-141 was developed from the tanning peptide Melanotan 2, a synthetically produced variant of a naturally occurring peptide hormone in the body that stimulates melanogenesis, known as alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). MSH activates certain melanocortin receptors, which then exert their effects. Indeed, MSH also has a powerful influence on lipid metabolism, appetite, and sexual libido.
