Bacteriostatic water for injection of peptides and growth hormone. Sterile, pyrogen-free water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which is added as a bacteriostatic preservative. Unlike ordinary sterile water, the bacteriostatic preservative can keep the dissolved peptide stable for an extended period.

The container can be reintroduced several times (most often through a sterile needle) and benzyl alcohol inhibits or stops the growth of most potentially contaminating bacteria.

What is the difference between bacteriostatic water and sterile water?

Bacteriostatic water for injection has an additional preservative added to the water called benzyl alcohol (BnOH). Benzyl alcohol is a colorless liquid with low toxicity and low vapor pressure. Sterile water for injection is a single dose of sterile water that does not contain additional antimicrobial, bacteriostatic, or buffering agents.

Unlike sterile water, bacteriostatic water can maintain amino acid connections of the peptide for a longer time.

If you reconstitute growth hormone or peptide solutions with ordinary sterile water, you must use the reconstituted solution within 2-3 days. However, if the substance is reconstituted with bacteriostatic water, it can be used for up to 3-4 weeks without degrading the substance.

Of course, the reconstituted solution must be stored in a refrigerator.

Special warnings and precautions for use

The solvent contains benzyl alcohol, a preservative, which can lead to anaphylactoid reactions.

Intravenous administration of preservative benzyl alcohol has been associated with serious adverse effects in pediatric patients, including newborns, characterized by central nervous system depression, metabolic acidosis, gasping for air, cardiovascular failure, and hematological abnormalities ("gasping syndrome").

It is not used for neonatal medications because of the potential for blood pressure changes and toxicity from benzyl alcohol. If bacteriostatic water is injected intravenously without dilution, it may cause some lysis of red blood cells because it is isotonic. Bacteriostatic water does not usually interact with other medications; however, some injectable medications may be incompatible. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant before injecting bacteriostatic water. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
