Description
Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone (androgen), responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics, muscle growth, bone density, energy levels, and libido. It acts on cells by binding to androgen receptors and regulates dozens of physiological processes, from red blood cell production and fat metabolism to cognitive function and emotional stability.
Once in the bloodstream, testosterone exists in two forms: bound (to proteins) and free. Only the free form can enter cells and activate the functions for which testosterone is known: muscle growth, energy production, libido, bone strength, and other processes related to the male hormonal profile. A decline in free testosterone due to aging or other factors can lead to symptoms such as fatigue, decreased libido, loss of muscle mass, and low mood.
